Arrival Details

This Trojan Spy arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Trojan Spy drops the following files:

  • %ProgramData%\UpdateService\UpdateService.exe
  • %ProgramData%\UpdateService\UpdateService.exe.config
  • %ProgramData%\UpdateService\settings.dat

(Note: %ProgramData% is a version of the Program Files folder where any user on a multi-user computer can make changes to programs. This contains application data for all users. This is usually C:\ProgramData in Windows Vista, 7, and 8.)

It adds the following processes:

  • "cmd" /c net group "domain admins" /domain
  • "%System%\schtasks.exe" /Delete /TN "UpdateService" /F
  • "%System%\schtasks.exe" /Create /RU SYSTEM /SC ONSTART /TN "UpdateService" /TR "\"%ProgramData%\UpdateService\UpdateService.exe\" -t"
  • "cmd" /c net group "domain users" /domain
  • net group "domain users" /domain
  • net group "domain admins" /domain
  • %System%\net1 group "domain admins" /domain
  • %System%\net1 group "domain users" /domain

(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, where it usually is C:\Windows\System32 on all Windows operating system versions.. %ProgramData% is a version of the Program Files folder where any user on a multi-user computer can make changes to programs. This contains application data for all users. This is usually C:\ProgramData in Windows Vista, 7, and 8.)

It creates the following folders:

  • %All Users Profile%\UpdateService

(Note: %All Users Profile% is the common user's profile folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\All Users on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, or C:\ProgramData on Windows Vista, 7, and 8. )

Other Details

This Trojan Spy does the following:

  • It adds the following scheduled task:
    • Task Name: UpdateService
    • Trigger: Repeat task every 10 Minutes
    • Actions: "%ProgramData%\UpdateService\UpdateService.exe"

(Note: %ProgramData% is a version of the Program Files folder where any user on a multi-user computer can make changes to programs. This contains application data for all users. This is usually C:\ProgramData in Windows Vista, 7, and 8.)

It deletes itself after execution.

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

This may be due to incomplete installation or other operating system conditions. If you do not find the same files/folders/registry information, please proceed to the next step.
