It takes advantage of the Unspecified vulnerability in the Java Runtime Environment component vulnerability to download possibly malicious files.

It usually arrives as a malware component inside a malicious .JAR file. This malicious Java class file accesses the data parameter in a certain HTML file that executes this file to get the URL where a binary can be downloaded.

This Trojan may be dropped by other malware. It may be unknowingly downloaded by a user while visiting malicious websites.

It executes the downloaded files. As a result, malicious routines of the downloaded files are exhibited on the affected system.

This Trojan takes advantage of the following software vulnerabilities to download possibly malicious files:

It saves the files it downloads using the following names:

  • %User Temp%\{random}.exe

(Note: %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003.)

It then executes the downloaded files. As a result, malicious routines of the downloaded files are exhibited on the affected system.

Step 1

For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

Step 2

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as JAVA_STREAM.CC. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
