This worm arrives via removable drives. It arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

It drops copies of itself in all drives. These dropped copies use the names of the folders located on the said drives for their file names.

Arrival Details

This worm arrives via removable drives.

It arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system and executes them:

  • %Program Files%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\explorer.exe

(Note: %Program Files% is the default Program Files folder, usually C:\Program Files.)

It drops the following files:

  • %Favorites%\&çÍ·×ÍøÖ·µ¼º½&.url
  • %Program Files%\Common Files\uiui8.dll
  • %System Root%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\¸Ä±äÄãµÄÒ»Éú.url
  • %System Root%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\Ãâ·ÑµçÓ°C.url
  • %System Root%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\Intennet Exploner.lnk
  • %System Root%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\ÌÔ±¦¹ºÎïA.url

Autostart Technique

This worm drops the following shortcut pointing to its copy in the User Startup folder to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

This worm deletes the following files:

Step 1

For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

Step 2

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product and note files detected as WORM_OTORUN.HKZ

Step 3

Identify and terminate files detected as WORM_OTORUN.HKZ

  1. If the detected file is displayed in either Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer but you cannot delete it, restart your computer in safe mode. To do this, refer to this link for the complete steps.
  2. If the detected file is not displayed in either Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer, continue doing the next steps.

Step 4

Restoring Deleted Registry Keys

  1. Still in Registry Editor, in the left panel, double-click the following:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet>
    Control>SafeBoot>Minimal
  2. Right-click on the key and choose New>Key. Change the value of the new key to:
    {4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  3. Right-click on the value name and choose Modify. Change the value data of this entry to:
    DiskDrive
  4. In the left panel, double-click the following:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet>
    Control>SafeBoot>Network
  5. Right-click on the key and choose New>Key. Change the value of the new key to:
    {4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  6. Right-click on the value name and choose Modify. Change the value data of this entry to:
    DiskDrive
  7. Close Registry Editor.

Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as WORM_OTORUN.HKZ. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files. Step 12

Restore this file from backup only Microsoft-related files will be restored. If this malware/grayware also deleted files related to programs that are not from Microsoft, please reinstall those programs on you computer again.

NOTES:

The deleted registry keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options cannot be identified by users since there are no reference values in the deleted keys.

The only way these keys can be identified and restored is by using a backup if the users have one.
