Arrival Details

This spyware arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This spyware drops the following component file(s):

  • %Windows%\Tasks\Adobe Flash Player Update.job - runs a hidden iexplore.exe every system startup to ensure automatic execution of the downloaded file registered as BHO

(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, where it usually is C:\Windows on all Windows operating system versions.)

Other System Modifications

This spyware adds the following registry entries:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\
CLSID\{GUID}
(Default) = "JScript Proxy auto-Configuration"

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\
CLSID\{GUID}\InprocServer32
(Default) = "%Windows%\{random directory found}\{random filename}.dll" (downloaded file)

Download Routine

This spyware accesses the following websites to download files:

  • http://{BLOCKED}6.{BLOCKED}2.164.253/vainew/index.html
    • redirected to http://{BLOCKED}6.{BLOCKED}2.164.253/{BLOCKED}new/wucpsw1.js

It saves the files it downloads using the following names:

  • %Windows%\{random directory found}\{random filename}.dll - detected as TSPY_BANKER.AFK

(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, where it usually is C:\Windows on all Windows operating system versions.)

It then executes the downloaded files. As a result, malicious routines of the downloaded files are exhibited on the affected system.

NOTES:

It registers the downloaded file as Browser Helper Object (BHO) by adding the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{GUID}
