Installation

This Trojan creates the following folders:

  • %All Users Profile%\Msn
  • %All Users Profile%\Msn\Msn2

(Note: %All Users Profile% is the All Users or Common profile folder, which is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users in Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, and C:\ProgramData in Windows Vista and 7.)

Other System Modifications

This Trojan modifies the following registry entries to disable the Windows Firewall settings:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\SharedAccess\Parametes\
FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile
Enable Firewall = "0"

(Note: The default value data of the said registry entry is "1".)

Drop Points

This Trojan uploads files to the following File Transfer Protocol (FTP) sites:

  • {BLOCKED}f.{BLOCKED}3.com
  • {BLOCKED}.{BLOCKED}h.com

NOTES:

This trojan renames files with extension .abc to .exe in current path folder.

It delete files with the following file extensions:

It executes other components of TSPY_PASSTEAL.TY.

It executes the following files with its command line parameters:

  • images.exe wmsn.klb
  • image.exe -f msn.klc
  • picture viewer.exe -f wmsn.klc
  • mdej.exe
  • cogj.reg

It modifies the file attributes of files under the following folder to read only, archive, system and hidden.

  • %All Users Profile%\Msn
  • %All Users Profile%\Msn\Msn2
  • %System Root%\users\public\Public Document

It renames the following files:

  • msn.kla to PIC_{date-yyyyddmm}_{time}.16
  • wmsn.klb to PIC_{date-yyyyddmm}_{time}.17
  • msn.klc to 001_{date-yyyyddmm}_{time}.33
  • wmsn.klb to 001_{date-yyyyddmm}_{time}.34
  • msn.klc to 001_{date-yyyyddmm}_{time}.35

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 2

Remove the malware/grayware file dropped/downloaded by BAT_PASSTEAL.TY. (Note: Please skip this step if the threat(s) listed below have already been removed.)
