Keeps patient data healthy with Trend Micro
OVERVIEW
Dedicated to providing high-quality mental health care to more than 1.3 million people in South London and beyond, the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM) has long been a cloud pioneer. SLAM was the first NHS trust to migrate to Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Azure and has partnered with Trend for over a decade to protect sensitive patient data. SLAM’s Chief Technology Officer, Stuart MacLellan, is a passionate advocate for patient care— and has been instrumental in driving the organisation’s digital transformation and cybersecurity initiatives.

CHALLENGES
Since SLAM handles sensitive patient data, the organisation is a prime target for sophisticated cyberattacks, including phishing and ransomware. SLAM must balance security measures with its staff and supply chain vendors’ user experience, ensuring that teams can work efficiently while supporting exceptional patient care. “These attacks are becoming more realistic, and that means it’s even harder to train staff against them,” says MacLellan.
As AI technologies continue to evolve, SLAM must also navigate the risks associated with these emerging tools and the potential for data misuse. “From our perspective, there are still lots of questions around AI models and how they could and should be used,” says MacLellan. “There’s a real risk in my world around sharing personal information. We’ve been helping with training, and we’re defining rules to make it known which data resides in a certain location and what happens to it in an AI model.”
We get much more information now than we ever did about the visibility of devices and what applications are being used.

WHY TREND
SLAM has been an enthusiastic Trend customer for more than ten years, and their confidence in this partner has grown as they have added more Trend security solutions to their environment. “Trend has always been at the forefront of the market,” says MacLellan, noting the vendor’s strong track record and innovative approach to threat detection. When they recently brought on the Trend Vision One platform, SLAM gained a comprehensive tool with advanced features—including AI-powered threat detection and response that enable his organisation to proactively address emerging threats.
SOLUTION
Since consolidating their security operations with Trend Vision One, SLAM has gained increased visibility across the entire infrastructure. MacLellan lauds the Cyber Risk Exposure Management (CREM) solution as key to helping the organisation identify and prioritise risks. “The [CREM] risk management perspective is critical—if you can put a real-world risk around a vulnerability, you can start to mitigate it,” he adds.
SLAM prioritises protecting its infrastructure on the cloud. By leveraging Cloud Security, the trust can more effectively detect, investigate, and respond to threats across endpoints, networks, and cloud environments.
RESULTS
By taking a platform approach to cybersecurity, SLAM can now automate routine tasks, improve incident response times, prioritise security efforts, and allocate resources effectively. “Visualisation of information is now much clearer for us,” says MacLellan. “We’re now dealing with a plethora of information coming from different sensors into one platform, so we get a more well-rounded ecosystem of information shown in a concise and informative way.”
Trend solutions have also allowed SLAM to make more informed decisions and take proactive measures to protect sensitive patient data. “We get much more information now than we ever did about the visibility of devices and what applications are being used,” says MacLellan. “It’s interesting to collate that data and get dynamic, risk-based alerts on people and what they’re doing depending on policies and processes. That’s going to really empower the decisions that are made organisationally around certain products.”
I think that the evolution of Trend and where it is going is really exciting.

WHAT'S NEXT
With the goal of building a more resilient future, SLAM plans to continue investing in robust security measures to prevent nation-state-level cyberattacks. “Healthcare is seen as national infrastructure, and we’re doing the best we can to keep ourselves off the radar of bad actors,” says MacLellan.
By leveraging Trend advanced technologies, SLAM will continue protecting sensitive data to ensure business continuity and enable exemplary patient care. “I think that the evolution of Trend and where it is going is really exciting,” says MacLellan.
