WEF Adds 15 Manufacturing Sites in Lighthoues Network
The 15 new sites boast their product output by 90% and got new revenue streams despite the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in all aspects of society. The new sites are also located in Asia, Europe, and North America.
On March 15, 2021, The World Economic Forum (WEF) unveiled an additional 15 new sites as parts of its Global Lighthouse Network, a community consisting of world-leading manufacturers that use Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies to enable growth.
According to WEF, 93% of these new sites increased their product output and found new revenue streams despite the current pandemic's disruption. Moreover, the manufacturing sites have been driving environmental sustainability, with 53% seeing measurable environmental sustainability benefits, while some have experienced almost a total reduction of CO2 emissions.
The new Lighthouses located in Asia are Bosch (Suzhou, China), Foxconn (Chengdu, China), HP Inc. (Singapore), Midea (Shunde, China), ReNew Power (Hubli, India), Tata Steel (Jamshedpur, India), Tsingtao Brewery (Qingdao, China), and Wistron (Kunshan, China).
In Europe, the Middle East, and North America, the new Lighthouses are Henkel (Montornes, Spain), Johnson & Johnson Consumer Health (Helsingborg, Sweden), Procter & Gamble (Amiens, France), Siemens (Amberg, Germany), STAR Refinery (Izmir, Turkey), Ericsson (Lewisville, USA), and Procter & Gamble (Lima, USA).
WEF's Global Lighthouse Network and its 69 sites are an avenue to develop, recreate and scale innovations. They also create opportunities for collaboration all the while setting new standards for the global manufacturing community. The Lighthouses demonstrate what is possible by embracing robust working modes to scale across their own production network and value chains.
De Boer added that the Lighthouses are proving that unlocking smart capacity through digital technologies is more effective than spending on capital infrastructure.
Agile technologies require better cyber security
The Global Lighthouse Network aims to share and learn from best practices, support collaboration, and help other manufacturers deploy technology, adopt sustainable solutions, and transform their workforce at pace and scale.
The use of Industry 4.0 technologies can help manufacturers achieve long-term growth and create new revenue streams. Utilizing flexible production systems and having a better understanding of market demand can also help increase production. However, shifting to newer Industry 4.0 models of production, means more robust cybersecurity must be in place, ensuring the security of the factory and its production systems.
Trend Micro released its paper entitled “Forward-looking security analysis of smart factories” showing proof-of-concept research on new security risks related to smart factories. The research thoroughly discussed security risks and overlooked attack vectors that must be considered to protect smart factories. Our experts also laid our possible attack scenarios and recommended countermeasures to help secure smart factories.
To learn more about the importance of cybersecurity solutions in protecting smart factories and their systems, read our e-book entitled “Strategic Investments To Secure Smart Manufacturers", which focuses on security issues in the convergence of IT and OT, showing the path that the manufacturing industry can take to survive and grow with DX.
If you want to know how you enhance smart factory cybersecurity, read our "Security Solutions for Smart Factories" brief, which lays out various solutions for a wide range of cybersecurity issues smart factories may face.
