CHALLENGES

“As more of our clients adopted AWS, Sierra-Cedar needed a security partner to enable those migrations to proceed smoothly and remain secure,” says Vice President of Corporate Security at Sierra-Cedar, Robert Miller. “One of the biggest challenges we have is staying up to date on AWS services. AWS is constantly releasing updates, so we’ve got to make sure that anything AWS adds doesn’t break our processes.”

As it migrates its customers to the cloud, the Sierra-Cedar security team must ensure that its security tools are still relevant and if not, quickly find new tools that are cloud-specific. It also has to confirm there are no misconfigurations across the various clouds and systems, as well as reduce the time it takes to investigate any issues. Finally, Sierra-Cedar needs to stay up to date on bad actors, new threats, and emerging tools—a tall order for a fast-growing company.

By the time we hear about a threat most times, Trend has already implemented the functionality or added the alert. That’s the kind of partner we have in Trend.

WHY TREND

“We recognized that Trend was best positioned to partner with us thanks to Trend’s AWS expertise, its in-depth knowledge of security threats, and its responsiveness,” says Miller. “The ease of procurement through AWS Marketplace simplifies the billing process for Sierra-Cedar’s customers and makes the charges transparent for the customer. What’s more, the support and knowledge of the Trend team is unmatched in the industry. I have someone to talk to whenever I have an issue of any kind. You don’t get a lot of that these days,” he added.

Sierra-Cedar’s customers are increasingly looking for security that is built into their processes, workflows, and systems, and Trend’s solutions help Sierra-Cedar meet that need. With the wide variety of modules that Trend offers, Sierra-Cedar has access to cutting-edge tools for integrity monitoring, log inspection, web reputation, and much more to help keep its customers secure wherever their workloads reside.

SOLUTION

Sierra-Cedar helps keep its AWS and other customers secure in the cloud and on premises with Trend Vision One – Cloud Security and Trend Vision One – Workload Security. “Trend’s workload security tool checks a lot of the boxes for us by default thanks to its integration with threat lists, application safelist and control, hostbased IPS, integrity monitoring, log inspection, the host-based firewall, and web reputation,” says Miller.

Miller also appreciates the speed of customization and the enhanced reliability inherent in Trend’s continual updating of alerts, detections, and rules, as well as the ability of Trend Vision One™ to conduct an entire investigation without requiring the use of third-party tools.

RESULTS

“Cloud Security has been instrumental in helping Sierra-Cedar move our customers from their data centers to the cloud, freeing my team from responsibility for managing the console, software, and updates. The seamlessness of the transition stands out for me,” says Miller.

“A lot of times when you transition somewhere, you’re having to reinvent the wheel in order to get the same level of visibility and detections. Trend already has a lot of those processes in place. We’re not having to build as many custom scripts to pull from the API to get logging, alerting, and everything else that we traditionally need. Trend expands our security wheelhouse and makes our job a lot easier. Trend solutions just work out of the box.”

Responsiveness ranks high on Miller’s list of reasons for valuing the partnership. A prime example is the Trend security team’s capacity for staying up to date on attacks and threat vectors. “By the time we hear about a threat most times, Trend has already implemented or added the functionality or added the alert. That’s the kind of partner we have in Trend,” says Miller.

WHAT'S NEXT

Miller’s biggest challenge is confirming that Sierra-Cedar’s intelligence and visibility keep pace with security trends and threats on the horizon. That’s why he is looking into Trend Vision One – Attack Surface Risk Management (ASRM) as a possible next step. Security remains a moving target, and Miller is drawn to Trend’s practice of continually building out its solutions and expanding its products as he assesses the landscape and creates a roadmap for his company’s future.
