ElastiCache Reserved Cache Node Payment Pending

Identify any pending Amazon ElastiCache Reserved Node purchases available within your AWS account and follow the Trend Cloud One™ – Conformity guidelines for remediation in order to receive a significant discount on the hourly charges. A payment-pending ElastiCache Reserved Node purchase is a reservation purchase that can't be fully processed due to issues with the payment method used by the AWS user, that maintains the "payment-pending" status long after the initial purchase attempt – not to be confused with the pending state temporarily installed during a successfully processed RI purchase (i.e. where the reservation status changes from "payment-pending" to "active" in a timely manner).

This rule can help you work with the AWS Well-Architected Framework.

Cost
optimisation

The cost savings when using Reserved Nodes over On-Demand Nodes are up to 70% when utilized in steady state (i.e. heavy utilization such as production cluster). Therefore, in order to receive this discount benefit, you need to make sure that all your Amazon ElastiCache reservation purchases have been fully processed (i.e. successfully confirmed by AWS) and none of them remained in the "payment-pending" state.


Audit

To identify any pending ElastiCache RCN purchases available in your AWS account, perform the following actions:

Using AWS Console

01 Sign in to the AWS Management Console.

02 Navigate to Amazon ElastiCache console available at https://console.aws.amazon.com/elasticache/.

03 In the main navigation panel, under Resources, choose Reserved nodes.

04 Choose the Reserved Node (RN) that you want to examine and check the value listed in the Status column to determine the current status of the reservation. If the reservation status is set to Payment-pending, the purchase payment for the selected Amazon ElastiCache Reserved Node (RN) was not fully processed, therefore, you must take action and retry your pending reservation payment by contacting AWS Support Center.

05 Repeat step no. 4 to check the status of each ElastiCache Reserved Node (RN) available within the current AWS region.

06 Change the AWS cloud region from the console navigation bar and repeat the Audit process for other regions.

Using AWS CLI

01 Run describe-reserved-cache-nodes command (OSX/Linux/UNIX) with custom query filters to list the identifier (ID) of each purchased ElastiCache Reserved Node available in the selected AWS region:

  --query 'ReservedCacheNodes[*].ReservedCacheNodeId'

02 The command output should return a table with the requested Reserved Node (RN) IDs:

03 Run again describe-reserved-cache-nodes command (OSX/Linux/UNIX) with the ID of the Amazon ElastiCache Reserved Node that you want to examine as the identifier parameter and custom output filters to describe the purchase state for the selected reservation:

  --region us-east-1
  --reserved-cache-node-id cc-production-redis-rn-001
  --query 'ReservedCacheNodes[*].State'

04 The command output should return the purchase status for the selected Reserved Node (RN):

If the purchase state returned by the describe-reserved-cache-nodes command output is "payment-pending", as shown in the example above, the purchase process for the selected Amazon ElastiCache Reserved Node was not fully processed, therefore, you must take action and retry your pending reservation payment by contacting AWS Support Center.

05 Repeat steps no. 3 and 4 for each ElastiCache Reserved Node (RN) available in the selected AWS region.

06 Change the AWS cloud region by updating the --region command parameter value and repeat the Remediation process for other regions.

Remediation / Resolution

Partial Upfront and All Upfront Reserved Nodes types require an upfront payment. When the financial institution that issued your payment method is rejecting the upfront payment required for Partial Upfront or All Upfront reservation types, your Reserved Node purchases can't be confirmed and Amazon set their status to "payment-pending". To mitigate incomplete Amazon ElastiCache reservations, you must retry the pending reservation payments by contacting Amazon Web Services (AWS). To create a support case for pending reservation payments, perform the following operations:

Creating a support case to request to retry your incomplete Amazon ElastiCache Reserved Node payments using the AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI) is not currently supported.

Using AWS Console

01 Sign in to the AWS Management Console.

02 Navigate to Support Center console available at https://console.aws.amazon.com/support/.

03 In the main navigation panel, choose Your support cases.

04 Choose Create case and perform the following operations:

  1. For How can we help? select Account and billing.
  2. For Service select Billing.
  3. For Category select Reserved Instances.
  4. Choose Next step: Additional information to continue the process.
  5. Provide the request subject in the Subject box, e.g. "Retry pending Amazon ElastiCache Reserved Node payments".
  6. In the Description textbox, provide a concise description of the issues. This will help the AWS support team to promptly evaluate your request.
  7. Specify the reservation ID of the Reserved Node that you want to discuss in the RI Lease ID – recommended box.
  8. Choose Next step: Solve now or contact us to continue.
  9. Choose the Contact us tab and perform the following actions:
    1. For Preferred contact language, choose your preferred correspondence language for the current support case.
    2. Select a preferred contact method that AWS support team can use to respond to your request.
  10. Choose Submit to send your request to Amazon Web Services (AWS). A customer support representative will contact you shortly.
